The problem is not "progress". The problem is the way people think about the concept of "progress". They mistake it for success and, to them, the measure of success is only money.

If you learn a new language that's not progress nor success because you didn't earn money from it. If you get better at sports that's not progress until you make money with it. If you write something better than you did yesterday, that's only progress if you have more reads, claps, and compliments on it.

We created a society that only accomplishes "progress" if it's financially beneficial and documented.

It's sad, and as you said, it's disgusting.
