I think you identified with Baldwin’s character because he’s grieving the loss of his youth and his friendship with Jake for a long time. He’s unable to become the adult and type of man Jake is because he can’t accept the responsibilities Jake deals with as a husband and family man. He isn’t ready to make such a big commitment and that’s why he’s a little jealous of what Jake has in the end. I believe he’s clearly unhappy and stays that way until the end.
